Final Report Now Available

On October 16, 2001, the Office of Space Commercialization and The George Washington University Space Policy Institute co-hosted a workshop examining the issues of collecting, classifying, accessing and using space economic data. The invitation-only event was intended to exchange information and facilitate a dialogue on space economic data issues, on both domestic and international levels. The workshop also examined other industries, such as travel and tourism, that could offer useful bases for comparison.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce Bruce P. Mehlman kicked off the event with an opening address that highlighted the importance of accurate and robust economic data for key government and industry decision makers. Scott Pace of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy provided an overview of some of his experiences as a collector and user of space economic data and his assessment of the gaps that exist in its collection and in classification of the space industry.

The workshop encouraged an open dialog among participants, which included representatives of several government departments, the space industry, the investment community, and aerospace consultants and analysts. Drawing upon this dialog, the George Washington University prepared a report on the status of space economic data and provided recommendations to the Department of Commerce on ways to improve data collection, classification, access and use.
