MATTHEW JONES (co-host)

Matt Jones of the Boeing Company is the current Chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Space Enterprise Council, which consists of various U.S. companies in the space technology field. Mr. Jones is Associate Director for GPS and Weather Programs at Boeing. He has been working in the space industry for 15 years, including previous government service with the Vice President's National Space Council, the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Space, and the policy office of the National Reconnaissance Office.

MICHAEL SHAW (co-host)

National Space-Based Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) Coordination Office

Michael Shaw is Director of the National Space-Based PNT Coordination Office, the secretariat for the National Space-Based PNT Executive Committee. In this capacity, he is responsible for ensuring implementation of the President's PNT policy and for coordinating GPS-related information and decisions among the member agencies of the Executive Committee. Mr. Shaw is also Director of Navigation and Spectrum Policy in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Previously, Mr. Shaw served as Director of Operations and then Commander of the 2nd Satellite Operations Squadron, which commands and controls the GPS constellation. He also served in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space, FAA's satellite navigation policy office, and the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Command, Control, Communication, and Intelligence.

CHARLES TRIMBLE (panel moderator)

Charlie Trimble founded Trimble Navigation and guided it to its dominant role in the GPS technology market as President and CEO. He stepped down in 1998 and assumed the role of Chairman of the U.S. GPS Industry Council, a trade association consisting of most major U.S. producers of GPS equipment. Before to founding Trimble, Mr. Trimble was manager of Integrated Circuit Research and Development at Hewlett-Packard's Santa Clara Division. Mr. Trimble received his B.S. degree in Engineering Physics, with honors, in 1963, and his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, in 1964, from the California Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Vice President's Space Advisory Board's task group on the future of U.S. Space Industrial Base for the National Space Council. In September of 1994, Mr. Trimble was honored with the Piper General Aviation award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) for pioneering the manufacture and application of affordable GPS.

BRENTON GREENE

Brent Greene joined Lucent Technologies in July 2004, taking on executive responsibility to advance Lucent and Bell Labs solutions in the government sector, and helping to grow Lucent government business by over 50% from 2004 to 2005. Previously, he was Director of the National Communications System (DHS/NCS) for over three years, responsible for the day-to-day operations, policy, technical, and programmatic oversight in coordination of government-wide activities in national security and emergency preparedness communications. As NCS Director, he also managed the President's National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee (NSTAC) and the significant information sharing processes associated with the NCS and NSTAC. Following 9/11, his agency coordinated many aspects of the restoration of key New York City telecom infrastructures, including communications supporting the recovery of Wall Street. Mr. Greene's previous work experience includes service at Sandia National Laboratories, the President's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection, and the Department of Defense. He is a 1971 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy until retiring as a Captain in 1995.

CHARLES SCHAIDLE

Chuck Schaidle is currently Engineering Manager of Machine Control and Guidance for the Caterpillar Electronics division of Caterpillar, Inc. He was instrumental in the formation and management of Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies (CTCT), Caterpillar's joint venture with Trimble Navigation for developing GPS based products. He has also managed research programs in hydraulics, powertrains, controls, and information systems. He previously worked for AT&T Bell Labs developing high speed data collection and analysis equipment. He holds degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois and Stanford University.

CHRISTIAN BECKNER

Christian Beckner is a Managing Consultant and Senior Homeland Security Analyst in IBM's Global Leadership Initiative, a thought leadership group within the company's Business Consulting Services division, focusing his research on homeland security and intelligence issues.  He co-authored the company's white paper on "Global Movement Management: Securing the Global Economy," published in Nov. 2005.  Prior to joining IBM, he worked at the Center for Strategic and International Studies as a fellow in the CSIS Homeland Security Program and also project manager of the Center's Human Space Exploration Initiative.  Mr. Beckner holds a B.A. in international relations and English from Stanford University and both an M.S. in Foreign Service and an MBA from Georgetown University.

WILLIAM BALL
Vice President, Public Policy
General Motors / OnStar

Bill Ball is Vice President of Public Policy at OnStar, a subsidiary of General Motors. He is responsible for the development and advocacy of OnStar's positions on telematics and related issues with the federal and state governments. Bill came to OnStar from GM, where he was most recently director of Strategic Planning and Program Management for GM Advanced Technology Vehicles. He has held other positions within GM, including executive director of Public Affairs and director of GM's Washington, D.C., government relations office. Prior to joining GM, Bill served in the U.S. Army and was associated with the Federal Trade Commission, McKinsey & Co., and was vice-president and general manager of Cellnet Partners, Inc., a cellular telephone venture. He holds chemical engineering and law degrees from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Stanford Center for Position, Navigation, and Time

Dr. Per Enge directs the GPS Research Laboratory at Stanford University, which develops satellite navigation systems based on GPS. These systems augment GPS to improve accuracy and provide real time error bounds. In addition, the laboratory is developing a suite of technologies to mitigate the navigator's vulnerability to radio frequency interference. The laboratory has pioneered two such systems that are now operational: DOT's Nationwide Differential GPS System and FAA's Wide Area Augmentation System. The laboratory is currently working on auto-land systems based on GPS. Dr. Enge has received the Kepler, Thurlow, and Burka Awards from the Institute of Navigation (ION) for his work. He is also a Fellow of the ION and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois in 1983.

BRUCE PEETZ

Bruce Peetz joined Trimble in 1988 and has held a variety of positions, including program and engineering management, product development in both Surveying and Mapping, general manager of Land Survey, and general manager of Systems Integration. In 1998, Peetz was named vice president of Advanced Technology and Systems. Peetz was responsible for the integration of technologies that provide systems solutions as well as advanced technology efforts that were formerly a part of Trimble Labs. He led the development of core software that may be leveraged across product lines. Prior to joining Trimble, Peetz was a research and development manager at Hewlett-Packard. Peetz received his B.S. in electrical engineering from M.I.T. He has more than 25 years experience in electronics, software, measurement and business.

GAVIN SCHROCK

State of Washington Reference Network

Gavin Schrock is the Administrator of the State of Washington Reference Network, a regional high-precision GPS network cooperative in the Pacific Northwest. He is a surveyor and geographic information systems (GIS) analyst for Seattle Public Utilities, where his strategic initiatives group focuses on using digital data to improve cost ratios for engineering projects. He has worked in surveying, mapping, data management, and GIS for over two decades in public works, commercial development, defense, and utilities. He has published in these fields and has taught these subjects at local, state, national, and international conferences.

RONALD HATCH
Director of Navigation Systems
John Deere / NavCom Technology

Ron Hatch is the Senior Scientist and Director of Navigation Systems at NavCom Technology, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of John Deere. Mr. Hatch received a B.S. degree in Math and Physics from Seattle Pacific College in 1962. His primary research is in high-precision differential GPS navigation. He has obtained more than a dozen patents in GPS technology. Mr. Hatch is a Fellow of the Institute of Navigation (ION). He was the 1994 recipient of the Kepler Award from the Satellite Division of the ION for sustained and significant contributions to satellite navigation. He also received the Thomas L. Thurlow Award from the ION in 2001. He has served as the Chair of the Satellite Division and is a past president of the ION.

MEAD TREADWELL
Commissioner
U.S. Arctic Research Commission

Mead Treadwell was appointed to the U.S. Arctic Research Commission by President George W. Bush in 2001. With six other commissioners, he advises the President and Congress on goals for the U.S. Arctic Research conducted by 15 U.S. government agencies.  Research in the Arctic focuses on global change, geophysics and natural resources, biodiversity, national security, health and social issues; total spending by the U.S. totals more than $400 million annually. Treadwell is also Chairman of Venture Ad Astra, LLC, an Anchorage, Alaska based firm founded in 2003 to invest in and develop new geospatial, imaging and display technologies. Treadwell is chairman of one of Venture Ad Astra's key investments, Immersive Media Company, now listed on the Toronto Venture Exchange. The firm manufactures 360 degree video cameras to support intelligence and asset protection, mapping services, entertainment and simulation.  Venture Ad Astra's project PhaseNet develops improvements to position, navigation and timing systems.
