President Signs Space Traffic Management Policy

President Trump signing SPD-3 before the National Space CouncilToday, during the third meeting of the National Space Council, President Trump signed Space Policy Directive-3, the first National Space Traffic Management Policy.

The policy provides guidelines and direction to ensure that the United States is a leader in providing a safe and secure environment as commercial and civil space traffic increases.

Under SPD-3, the Department of Commerce will make space safety data and services available to the public, while the Department of Defense maintains the authoritative catalogue of space objects.

During the Space Council meeting, Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross announced the selection of Mr. Kevin O’Connell as the incoming Director of the Office of Space Commerce.

Secretary Ross also announced that this week, NOAA will publish an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on commercial remote sensing regulatory reform.
