NOAA Requests Funding Increases for Office of Space Commerce, Commercial Weather Data Pilot
The President’s Fiscal Year 2017 budget request for NOAA, released February 9, includes $2 million for the Office of Space Commerce, a $1.4 million increase compared to its current funding level. The funds will increase the capacity of the office to evaluate commercial opportunities for NOAA, including commercial data buys, and to fulfill its statutory functions.
The NOAA budget also includes $5 million for a Commercial Weather Data Pilot (CWDP), which was established by Congress in FY 2016 with $3 million in initial funding. The CWDP provides a testing bed to work with commercial providers’ data and NOAA’s observational requirements.
