Commerce Provides Updates at 4th National Space Council Meeting

Today, at the fourth meeting of the National Space Council, Under Secretary of Commerce Karen Dunn Kelley reported on the Commerce Department’s progress in promoting U.S. space commerce and implementing the tasks assigned to it under Space Policy Directives 2 and 3.

Among other things, Ms. Kelley announced that the Department had submitted to OMB a new draft rule that, if finalized, will revolutionize the way the government regulates use of cameras in space.

She also announced that the Department had sent to Capitol Hill a new legislative proposal — the SPACE Act. As directed by SPD-2, the proposal calls for creating a consolidated Bureau of Space Commerce, to be led by a Senate-confirmed Assistant Secretary.
