DOC Announces New Effort to Measure the U.S. Space Economy

The Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) and Office of Space Commerce have initiated a new effort to measure the relative importance of the space sector on the U.S. economy.

Called the Space Economy Satellite Account (SESA), the effort will provide an estimate of the space economy’s contribution to current-dollar gross domestic product (GDP) and will illustrate the contributions of individual industries to the U.S. space economy.

BEA announced its ongoing development of the SESA in the December 2019 issue of Survey of Current Business, the BEA journal. In the journal article, BEA asks for feedback from data users and interested stakeholders regarding the definitions and industries used in the SESA.
